Covent Garden Market’s first priority is its tenants and its customers. With dozens of vendors and thousands of customers daily the market is a thriving success in downtown London. As part of a strategic plan to reduce energy and maintenance costs, the market looked to its high wattage metal halide general space lighting for cost reduction opportunities.
Ecopower, working with Stein Industries Engineers and technicians, and using ProTerra LED technology, custom designed an integrated LED fixture and control solution. By replacing existing metal halide fixtures, consumption has been reduced initially by 67% and further reductions are achieved daily thru a daylight harvesting system via a custom AppleIPAD™ application developed by Stein Industries and Ecopower. Total energy reductions will be in excess of 80%.
Lighting in other areas of the facility has been upgraded. The offices have been changed over from 8’ fluorescents to 2’x2’ LED Flat Panels and the garbage room fluorescent and high bay lighting has been change to LED Linears and 122watt LED High Bays.
Maintenance costs were well over a $ 100.00 an hour plus parts. The LED installed solutions will be maintenance free for years to come, saving the facility thousands of dollars. Instead of turning off half of the lights at night, the facility is now dimmed to 30% automatically, saving thousands in energy costs while ensuring security and safety during overnight hours.
Bob Usher, Covent Garden’s General Manager “The office lighting is so quiet, it’s eerie, and there are no more complaints of headaches caused by the fluorescent lighting”. LED Lighting is a certified Seasonal Affective Disorder or ‘SAD’ therapy and is beneficial to occupants of areas lit using properly engineered LED lighting fixtures and controls.
The project was partially funded by the Ontario Power Authorities SaveOn Energy program delivered by London Hydro. Ecopower and the market are currently assessing the energy savings and looking to implement further changes to reduce energy consumption. For more information on this project visit www.ecopower.net.
